I love a good driving adventure book, and I’ve read plenty. But few are as enjoyable as this one to read, and have you cheering on the pair in the tale as they struggle toward their goal.
The book is about the Mini named The Buzby Special and the two mad Englishmen who entered it in the longest car rally in history - the 1977 London to Sydney Marathon.
As author Simon Park says in the foreword; “essentially it is a story about a couple of blokes who were game for a laugh and a bit of an adventure, and got more than they bargained for.”
Although they thought they were well-prepared when they left their hometown of Oxford, they realised how ill-prepared they really were by the time they reached London - even before the rally started.
From then on it was a case of struggling on, always wary of being disqualified for not reaching the special exclusion controls on time. They soon realised that time penalties meant nothing, so long as they remained in the rally and reached the end.
Reach Sydney they did, in an honourable last place, but 22 of the original 70-car field didn’t, so it was a gallant effort.
This is one of those timeless adventure books that I just couldn’t put down.
We are pleased to offer the 256-page book through our website for only $34 plus postage.
