BMC Competitions Department
Bill Price was appointed assistant to Marcus Chambers, then head of the BMC Competitions Department, in 1960, and spent the next 21 years with the team, in one capacity or another.
He is in a unique position to tell the complete story of the Competitions Department, having also served under Stuart Turner and Peter Browning, and running Leyland Special Tuning himself from 1976 to 1977.
Bill spent a fair bit of time on the road with the rally teams, as service crew and later running the Works racing programme.
This book is written in an easy to follow manner, and often from a personal point of view.
Following a year by year, then event by event, format, it is easy to find any particular event that takes your fancy.
There are also hundreds of excellent colour and black and white photos, which really bring the period alive.
The sections on the Monte Carlo Rallies are quite revealing, as some of the secrets of the rule-fudging, and the full story of the 1966 debacle, and the 1968 near-disaster, are revealed.
The 1968 London to Sydney marathon is covered in fairly good detail, as are most of the events Price was personally involved with.
This is an excellent book for any Mini/BMC/Leyland or rally enthusiast, but at the price it won’t suit everybody’s budget.
If you are a die-hard BMC enthusiast, you will surely find plenty of interest here.
If you think you only need one book about the BMC Works team, then this is the book to get.
